Laundry Tricks to Treat Halloween Candy Stains

What’s scarier than ghosts and ghouls? Finding melted Halloween candy in your kid’s pocket while you’re doing laundry! (Or maybe it’s your pocket, no judgement.)

No need to fear, we have a few tricks up our sleeve for removing a variety of candy stains from your clothes.

Chocolate

Step 1: Gently remove any excess chocolate from the fabric with a butter knife or spoon.

Step 2: Run the back of the stained fabric under cold water until its saturated.

Step 3: Rub liquid laundry detergent or liquid dish soap into the stain. Let the garment sit for 5 minutes.

Step 4: Soak the clothing in cold water for 15 minutes, gently rubbing the stain every 3-5 minutes until the stain has been removed.

If the stain remains, use a stain remover before laundering in the washing machine. Be sure to check that the stain is completely removed before placing in the dryer.

Taffy and Gum

Step 1: Place the garment in the freezer or apply ice to the stained area until it is hardened.

Step 2: Once hardened, use a dull scraper to remove as much of the gum or taffy as possible.

Step 3: Apply a pre-wash treatment spray to the stained area and allow it to sit for a minute.

Step 4: Rub liquid laundry detergent into the stained area with a small brush to pull out remaining gum or taffy.

Step 5: Rinse garment with hot water. Once the stain has been removed, launder as usual.

Caramel

Step 1: Mix 1 tablespoon of water with 3 tablespoons of borax, then apply the solution to the stain.

Step 2: Allow the clothing to sit for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Step 3: Rub liquid detergent into the stain until saturated.

Step 4: Let the garment sit for 5 minutes, then run the back of the fabric under hot water to force the stain out.

If the stain remains, use a stain remover before laundering in the washing machine. Be sure to check that the stain is completely removed before placing in the dryer.

Food Coloring

Step 1: Mix 1 quart of water, ½ tablespoon of liquid laundry detergent, and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, then soak the garment in the solution for 15 minutes.

Step 2: Gently rub to loosen the fabric to loosen the stain.

Step 3: Soak the garment in the above solution for another 15 minutes. Rinse well.

Step 4: Mix 1 quart of warm water and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, then soak the garment in the mixture for 30 minutes.

Step 5: Launder as soon as possible with oxygen bleach.

Congratulations, it’s like you’re a ghostbuster of stain removal! Now you can enjoy the Halloween season with nothing to fear…at least when it comes to your laundry.
